Abundance in Scarcity

1 Kings 17:14 reads, "For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: 'The jar of flour will not be used up, and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.'" 

This verse means that God promises to provide for the needs of the widow and Elijah miraculously during the drought; the jar of flour and jug of oil represent sustenance and illustrate God's ability to perform miracles and provide for His people, even in challenging circumstances. It's a message of faith and trust in God's providence.

So, where does your drought lie? Is it unhappiness, lack of resources, depression, or unforgiveness? Where is your dryness?

In 1 Kings 17:14, we encounter a powerful moment in the life of the prophet Elijah. By this point, Elijah had been sent by God to a widow in the town of Zarephath during a severe drought. The widow and her son were on the verge of starvation, having only a handful of flour and a little oil left to make their final meal before succumbing to their dire circumstances.

Despite the scarcity and desperation, Elijah confidently asks the widow to provide him with food and water. This might seem strange considering their desperate situation, but Elijah's request is not without hope. He assures the widow that if she follows his instructions, her flour and jug of oil will not dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.

In this verse, the widow makes a tremendous act of faith by trusting Elijah's words and stepping out in obedience. She gives away the last of her provisions, wondering where her next meal will come from. She chooses to believe that God will indeed provide. And as she obeys, her faith is rewarded. Her jar of flour and jug of oil are miraculously replenished day after day, sustaining her and her son throughout the entirety of the drought.

This account teaches us several important lessons. First, it reminds us that God is a provider even in desperate situations. When all seems lost, He has the power to restore, replenish, and miraculously provide for His people. Second, it highlights the significance of faith and obedience in our relationship with God. Though seemingly risky, the widow's faith paved the way for God's provision in her life.

We certainly can take inspiration from the widow's faith and obedience. Like her, we may find ourselves in challenging circumstances where resources are scarce, and hope is dim. Yet, we can trust God's provision, knowing He can and will supply our needs according to His perfect timing.

Let us not allow scarcity or fear to paralyze our faith. Instead, like the widow, let us boldly step out in obedience, giving what we have with an open hand and trusting that God will multiply it beyond our limited understanding. May this story from 1 Kings 17:14 remind us of God's faithfulness and provision in our lives, even in the most challenging times.

It's not entirely about money or 'things' you may lack because nothing else seems to matter when your heart and soul are in a drought.
